“A First Class School; A First Class Education.”
Beijing Zhongguancun High School, established in 1982, is located in the heart of Zhongguancun. After merging with Qinghuayuan High School in 1998 and with Shuangyushu High School in 2003 it now boasts 4,000 students in over 90 classes with 300 faculty and staff.
The mission of the school is to “create an education for students’ development and provide an arena for students’ success.” Combining an excellent teaching staff and an atmosphere of academic thought and creativity, students leave Zhongguancun High School ready to take on the rigors of higher education not only academically, but also fully prepared for life.
Recently the school was honored with the “Beijing Environmental Model School” award for its efforts in promoting environmental awareness in all parts of life (“humanism, technology, and patriotism”) and to create a culture of environmental awareness in the classroom as well as the campus itself-- known for its pristine “spring-like” environment. Many different aspects of the school make it a Model School for Environment. An astronomy laboratory, weather station, computer classrooms, sports fields, and an internationally ranked wild animal museum with over 910 exhibits are all examples of why Zhongguancun High School was given this distinguished award.
The school insists on employing high caliber teachers and places great importance on teaching quality. This is why recent university-entrance acceptance rates were 100% and why in the year of 2001 students in art, sports teams, and science groups made many outstanding achievements in both domestic and international competitions. In 2003, the Orchestral and Folk group took part in the Seventh Students’ Art Festival of Beijing City. The glee club won the first award in Haidian District. The dance group also won the first and second awards in the Festival. In the Fifth Domestic Teenagers Architecture Contest our students won the first place award. In the National E-Fashion Dress Contest we received seven awards altogether in subjects ranging from Science, English, and Aviation. At the Spring Basketball Contest in 2003, two first place awards, and a third place award was received in collaboration with Shoushida Affiliated School. A first place award in the Rejuvenate China Contest was awarded as well. In the autumn sports meeting our senior team finished seventh, the junior team finished sixth.
“OM” is a yearly contest that challenges the student’s abilities in the arts and science as well as logic. The delegations of students from each school compete for the top three awards. Each award allows the students to collect points for their senior school entrance examinations. “Points” play an important role in university entrance examinations for senior school students. Since the year 2000, our junior and senior school delegations have received the top the awards multiple times in Beijing. In 2001 the junior school delegation competed at the international contest in America and had excellent results. This past year the junior team was awarded first prize in the International OM contest in Beijing.
In 2003 the school was honored with the “Haidian Advanced Education Award” for its reputation in society of strict teaching, excellence in education, and remarkable University entrance-examination scores. Other awards the school has won recently are: “The Domestic Advanced Collectivity award for Art Education”; “The Golden Sail Orchestral Corp award”; “The Beijing Model School Award for Science,” and the “Haidian Advanced Award for Traditional Sports.”
Now that it has been recognized as a “Beijing Model High School,” students and teachers alike are striving to make “Zhongguancun High School” a well-known brand of education, and are confident they will live up to their name as “a first class school and a first class education.”
